About us
Personal story
The creators of DizzinessDoctor.com have been patients in different healthcare settings, in different countries, with the quality of care ranging from dreadful to superior.
We have been health care providers in different healthcare settings and in different institutions, ranging from rudimentary to very advanced.
In the United States it is usually (though not always) possible to receive good medical care. Finding such care often requires some “navigation” through the healthcare system, but the system does not automatically “coach” you through this. That’s where some guidance can come in handy.
Why have we created this website?
Symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, lightheadedness, disequilibrium, etc. are among the most common human experiences. For many people these symptoms are mild, short and do not recur. But in the United States alone, tens of millions of people each year have symptoms that are enough to make them seek medical care.
There are not many clinicians who specialize in dizziness. Over the course of our careers as health care providers, each of us will have tried to help a few tens of thousands of patients. The few of us who do this cannot directly help tens of millions of people each year.
Consequently, if direct medical care is not available (or not available in a timely fashion), many people understandably look for answers on the internet. But most of the information on the internet is “unfiltered,” and it can be difficult to sort through it without specialist knowledge.
Our hope is that if we can do some of the “filtering” work for you, then you will be able to:
- Arrive at an understanding of the possible causes and their management strategies, or…
- At least know how to discuss your symptoms productively with a health care provider so that they can secure a diagnosis and get you on the path to treatment.
We do not expect our students to accept what we teach merely based on our authority. Rather, we expect our educational materials — and indeed, any materials on the internet — to be judged by the quality of the data and peer-reviewed publications on which the presentations are based. For this reason, we try to provide publication references in nearly every presentation.
If you are looking for information about a dizziness-related topic that is not available on our website, then send us an email ([email protected]) with your suggestion. If multiple users suggest the same topic, then our curriculum committee will determine whether to develop it into a course.
To keep our website and its materials free from commercial bias, we have purposefully chosen to use no advertising, and we rely on no sponsors. We receive no support from pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, other industry sponsors, or professional associations. Our support comes exclusively from our users. If you support us because our educational materials have helped you, or if you refer our website to other people whom it might benefit, then our mission has been advanced, and we express our heartfelt gratitude to you.
